Ramnagar-Dehradun Express flagged off: First direct train links Kumaon-Garhwal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday, 18 July virtually flagged off the inaugural run of the Ramnagar-Dehradun Express, launching the first-ever direct express train service connecting the Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand. The new service addresses a long-pending demand from residents across both regions and significantly bolsters intra-state rail connectivity.
Schedule and Route Details
Train 15310 will depart Ramnagar at 5:50 am and arrive at Dehradun by 12:40 pm, enabling same-day return travel. On the return leg, train 15309 leaves Dehradun at 3:55 pm and reaches Ramnagar by 11:30 pm. The service operates every Wednesday and Friday, halting at Kashipur, Roshanpur, Pipalsana, Moradabad, Najibabad, and Haridwar en route.
Coach Composition and Passenger Convenience
The train offers a wide range of travel classes — AC Second Class, AC Third Class, AC Chair Car, Sleeper Class, Second Sitting, and General Second Class — catering to passengers across income groups. The mid-day arrival in Dehradun allows commuters to complete official, educational, business, or personal work and return the same day.
Who Benefits and Why It Matters
The service is expected to benefit residents of Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, and Dehradun districts in Uttarakhand, as well as Moradabad and Bijnor districts in Uttar Pradesh, including students, farmers, and traders. Pilgrims will gain easier access to the Char Dham circuit — Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri — via onward connectivity from Haridwar and Dehradun. Tourism to Jim Corbett National Park, the Girija Devi Temple, and the ancient sites of Sitamadhi (also known as Sitavani) is also expected to receive a boost.
Broader Infrastructure Push in Uttarakhand
Vaishnaw announced that Rishikesh railway station will be developed as a feeder station to ease congestion at Haridwar, with a master plan underway to expand capacity and improve connectivity for both stations. He added that 11 railway stations across Uttarakhand are currently being redeveloped, including Dehradun, Haridwar Junction, Harrawala, Kashipur Junction, Kichha, Kotdwar, Roorkee, Kathgodam, Lal Kuan Junction, Ramnagar, and Tanakpur.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami noted that rail connectivity in the state has improved considerably in recent years, and highlighted that work on the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line is progressing rapidly — a project he described as a future lifeline for the social, economic, religious, and tourism development of the state. The Ramnagar-Dehradun Express adds fresh momentum to that broader connectivity agenda.
