Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 20 (NationPress) In a significant turn of events in the Sabarimala gold theft investigation, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has apprehended former Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president A. Padmakumar after extensive questioning at a confidential location. This brings the total arrests in the case to six.

Padmakumar, who served as a CPI(M) legislator for the Konni Assembly constituency from 1991 to 1996, is accused of playing a pivotal role in the unauthorized removal of gold-plated sheets from the Kattillappadi near the Sabarimala sanctum sanctorum during his presidency in 2019.

He is scheduled to appear before the Kollam Vigilance Court later today.

According to the initial findings by the SIT, the fraud involving the gold sheets was carried out with Padmakumar's full knowledge, making him the eighth accused in the ongoing investigation.

The FIR indicates that the gold sheets were taken and given to a contractor with the Board's consent.

Former administrative officer Murari Babu and other officials have confirmed that the decision was made at the Board level.

Furthermore, testimonies from employees close to Padmakumar during his term support these allegations.

Investigators suspect that the contractor was granted unrestricted access to Sabarimala under Padmakumar's directions.

The Devaswom Vigilance, which initially investigated the matter, had also suggested that there was institutional involvement in the theft.

In a related development, former Devaswom Commissioner and Board president N. Vasu, the third accused, has been remanded back to SIT custody.

He was escorted to the Kollam Vigilance Court from Kottarakkara sub-jail amid substantial police protection.

Attempts made by BJP workers to obstruct the police vehicle carrying Vasu led to a brief standoff.

Police successfully dispersed the demonstrators and cleared the way for the vehicle.

With Padmakumar's arrest and Vasu's continued interrogation, investigators believe they are getting closer to uncovering a conspiracy that allegedly involves high-ranking officials of the Devaswom Board.

It was only late Wednesday that the SIT instructed him to come in for questioning, amid rising speculation about his summons on Friday.

Padmakumar was leading the TDB in 2019 when the alleged gold theft transpired during the gold-plating of the Sabarimala temple's sanctum structures.

Others arrested include the primary suspect, Unnikrishnan Potti, along with Vasu and three retired officials of the Devaswom Board.
