Agartala, April 26 (NationPress) Four individuals, including two retired educators, were taken into custody by the police in the last 24 hours across three districts of Tripura for posting controversial material on social media related to the Pahalgam terror attack, officials confirmed on Saturday.

A police representative stated that retired teacher Jawahar Debnath and student leader Kuldip Mandal were apprehended in Ambassa within the Dhalai district, while another retired teacher, Sajal Chakraborty, was detained in Dharmanagar in the northern Tripura district.

A youth named Jahirul Islam was also arrested in Sonamura, located in the Sepahijala district.

The official mentioned that these four individuals were charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.

Seeking police custody, all four will be presented in their respective subdivision courts, according to the official.

Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury, also a member of the CPI-M politburo, argued that retired teacher Jawahar Debnath and student leader Kuldip Mandal did not post any anti-national comments; their posts were aimed at promoting national integration.

The Tripura police stated in a message on their X handle that they had noted the circulation of provocative and misleading content on social media.

"Be informed that sharing, forwarding, or creating such content constitutes an offense under the law. Strict legal measures will be enacted against those participating in such activities," the police warned.

They also urged the public not to engage with or disseminate any misleading or provocative messages.

"We call upon all citizens to remain vigilant and report any unlawful activities to the police immediately," the appeal articulated.

In the meantime, Chief Minister Manik Saha directed the Superintendents of Police (SPs) in all eight districts on Friday to continuously provide pertinent information to the Chief Minister's Secretariat regarding the presence of any Pakistani nationals in the state, officials disclosed.

An official from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) noted that the Chief Minister also instructed all District Magistrates (DMs) to maintain heightened vigilance and quickly notify the administration about any such concerns, especially following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir.

The directives were given during a high-level video conference at the state secretariat, where the Chief Minister assessed the law and order situation, development initiatives, and preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season.
