Kolkata, Oct 22 (NationPress) The police have made an additional arrest on Wednesday concerning the assault of a female junior doctor affiliated with the Uluberia Sarat Chandra Chatterjee Medical College and Hospital located in the Howrah district, near Kolkata, which occurred on Monday evening.
The individual apprehended on Wednesday has been named Sheikh Samrat. This marks the fourth arrest related to the incident since Tuesday.
According to district police sources, Samrat is known to be a close associate of the main suspect in this case, Sheikh Babulal, a traffic Home Guard stationed at the Uluberia outpost of the West Bengal Police. He was present at the scene during the assault on the doctor.
Samrat is set to appear at a district court in Howrah later on Wednesday, where the public prosecutor will request his police custody.
In the meantime, Babulal, who has affiliations with the ruling Trinamool Congress, has already been relieved of his duties as a traffic Home Guard. The doctor has accused Babulal of issuing a rape threat.
Babulal, along with two other suspects who were arrested previously, was presented at the district court in Howrah on Tuesday, where they were remanded into police custody for three days.
It is important to note that the junior doctor was working in the maternity ward when the attack occurred. After attending to a relative of the traffic Home Guard, she went to the hospital restroom, where Babulal and his accomplices assaulted her.
The junior doctor reported that one of her assailants twisted her arm while another slapped her neck. Furthermore, it is alleged that some members of the group, including Babulal, threatened to rape and kill her. Eventually, the ward nurse and other staff intervened to rescue her from the attackers.
That same evening, the junior doctor filed a formal complaint at the Uluberia police station. Following her complaint, police initiated an investigation, leading to the arrest of three individuals, including Babulal, on Tuesday morning.
