Kolkata, Oct 22 (NationPress) The Governor of West Bengal, C.V. Ananda Bose, expressed his deep concern on Wednesday regarding the recent assault on a female junior doctor at a government hospital located near Howrah. He emphasized that such an attack on medical professionals is utterly unacceptable in a civilised society.
In a statement released by the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, the Governor highlighted, “Doctors are the lifeline of our society and dedicate their entire lives to providing care when we need it. Violence against them is neither civilised nor tolerable.”
He also called upon the public to recognize the invaluable role doctors play in delivering essential care to those in need.
The main suspect in the assault, Sheikh Babulal, a traffic home guard associated with the Uluberia Traffic Guard, is known to have ties with the local Trinamool Congress leadership. He has been taken into police custody and dismissed from his position.
It is reported that the junior doctor was attacked while working in the maternity ward. After attending to a relative of the home guard, she sought refuge in the hospital restroom, where Babulal and others confronted her.
The junior doctor alleged that one of the assailants twisted her arm while another slapped her. There were also threats of sexual assault and murder from the group, with the doctor being rescued later by the ward nurse and staff.
Following the incident, the junior doctor filed a formal complaint at the Uluberia police station that night. The police initiated an investigation, resulting in the arrest of three individuals, including Babulal, the next morning.
