Gaurav Gogoi Brushes Off Assam CM's Remarks on Friendship Group Role
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 25 (NationPress) The president of Assam Congress and Member of Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, on Wednesday disregarded the comments made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding his appointment as the leader of the India-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group, asserting that the CM's remarks do not warrant a serious reply.
In a press interaction, Gogoi stated that a Chief Minister's primary focus should be on governance and the welfare of the populace, rather than making political comments about parliamentary roles.
“The remarks from the Chief Minister are not deserving of serious consideration. Everything is documented clearly, and there is no need to place undue significance on such comments,” he remarked.
In response to CM Sarma's suggestion that Gogoi should have been assigned a “responsibility related to Pakistan,” the Congress leader indicated that such comments merely mirror the ruling party's political mindset.
“I do not feel the need to respond to every political statement. My duty lies with Parliament and the constituents who chose me,” Gogoi asserted.
He highlighted that Parliamentary Friendship Groups are formed through a recognized institutional process and are intended to bolster India’s international parliamentary relationships. “The Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Philippines has been established to enhance dialogue and cooperation between two democratic nations. It is a responsibility granted by the Lok Sabha, and I will fulfill it earnestly,” he continued.
Gogoi further advocated that instead of engaging in political rhetoric, leaders should concentrate on pressing issues such as employment, education, inflation, and the holistic development of Assam.
“The residents of Assam seek solutions to tangible problems. They are not drawn to political jabs or diversions,” he stated.
The Congress MP reaffirmed his commitment to parliamentary responsibilities and the enhancement of democratic institutions in India.
“My contributions are evident, both within and outside Parliament. I prioritize constructive engagement and responsible governance,” he expressed.
Recently, Gogoi was appointed as the President of the India-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group for the 18th Lok Sabha by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
Parliamentary Friendship Groups act as informal platforms to foster bilateral relations, legislative discussions, and mutual understanding among countries.
Political discourse between the BJP and Congress in Assam has escalated in recent months in the lead-up to the 2026 Assembly elections.
