How Many Voters Does Goa Have After the Latest Electoral Roll Revision?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Panaji, Feb 21 (NationPress) The Election Commission has released the final electoral roll for Goa, revealing a total of 10,57,566 eligible voters in the state following a comprehensive revision of the rolls.
This updated roster comes after a meticulous verification process designed to refine the electorate and eliminate inconsistencies ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Goa noted that there were 11,85,034 voters before the draft publication, which included 5,73,853 males and 6,11,168 females.
To ensure the list's accuracy, booth-level officers provided enumeration forms to all 11.85 lakh citizens, receiving 10,84,992 completed forms, resulting in a noteworthy 91.56% return rate. This verification process eliminated 1,00,042 voters due to various reasons like death, migration, and duplication, according to an official report.
Data on the removed voters indicates that 25,574 were deceased, 29,729 were untraceable, and around 40,000 had relocated.
Following these adjustments, the draft list published on December 16 last year showed 10,84,992 voters, comprising 5.23 lakh males, 5.61 lakh females, and nine third-gender voters.
Technical mapping was pivotal in finalizing the voter list. Out of the 10,84,992 voters in the draft, approximately 9 lakh (or 83.19%) were accurately mapped with personal or parental electoral details. However, the Election Commission's IT system flagged logical discrepancies for about 59,000 of these mapped voters, which were subsequently resolved under various ECINET categories.
Officials have confirmed that the final electoral roll is available for public viewing at all polling stations and can be inspected at the offices of the Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers starting Saturday.
In the 2022 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party retained power by securing 20 out of 40 seats, later gaining support from smaller parties and Independents to form the government. The Congress emerged as the primary opposition party but could not establish a coalition.
In the upcoming 2024 general elections for the Lok Sabha, Goa's two parliamentary constituencies were divided, with the BJP winning one seat and the Congress the other, indicating a competitive two-party dynamic in the state's national politics.
