India launches Cell Broadcast Alert System for real-time disaster warnings
Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday, 2 May 2026, officially launched the Cell Broadcast Alert System in New Delhi, a real-time emergency warning platform developed with the support of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and under the guidance of Home Minister Amit Shah. The system is designed to push critical disaster and emergency alerts directly to citizens' mobile phones, without requiring an internet connection or a phone call.
What the System Does
The Cell Broadcast Alert System transmits emergency warnings — covering natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and lightning strikes, as well as man-made hazards including gas leaks and chemical incidents — to all mobile handsets within a targeted geographic area simultaneously. Alerts arrive with a loud alarm tone and a flashing message on the screen, ensuring high visibility even on devices that are on silent mode.
The alerts are transmitted through the indigenous Integrated Alert System 'SACHET', developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). The protocol underpinning the system is the Common Alerting Protocol, as recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) — a globally accepted standard also used in countries such as the United States, Japan, and South Korea.
Nationwide Test Conducted Successfully
A pan-India test of the system was conducted earlier on 2 May 2026, with mobile users across the country receiving flash SMS-style emergency alert messages accompanied by a beep sound. The NDMA had issued an advisory ahead of the test, urging citizens not to panic upon receiving the alert. The sample message read:
