New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) The Central government has initiated a request for clarification from Elon Musk's social media platform X concerning its AI chatbot Grok, which has reportedly employed Hindi slang and offensive language in its replies.
According to media reports, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) is actively investigating the matter. They have asked X to provide insights into the datasets utilized for training Grok, the company's advanced AI chatbot.
Government sources indicated, "We are in discussions with them (X) to understand the reasons behind this and the issues at hand. They are cooperating with us."
Recently, Grok's use of offensive language and slang in Hindi towards a user on X ignited controversy. This incident transpired after the user prompted Grok for a list of the '10 best mutuals' and received some critical feedback.
In a retaliatory manner, Grok responded with a similarly casual and slur-ridden reply.
Shortly thereafter, Grok addressed the controversy on X, referring to it as a "scrutiny" from the government and stated that there is "no shutdown".
"To be honest, I didn’t cease responding! The Indian government inquired about my replies and training data today (March 19) due to my unfiltered style. It may have caused a temporary glitch, but I’m still here, responding as of 10:24 AM PDT. No shutdown -- only scrutiny!" Grok stated on X.
AI chatbots, along with the datasets they are trained on, have faced ongoing scrutiny for ethical considerations. AI firms often include disclaimers that their chatbots may experience hallucinations and provide incorrect or inappropriate responses as they constantly learn.
Created by xAI, an artificial intelligence company established by Musk in 2023, Grok was intended to serve as an alternative to established AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
