Should the Government Address Priyanka Chaturvedi's Concerns on AI Apps Sexualising Women on X?

Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 2 (NationPress) Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has called upon the government to urgently address the alarming rise of AI applications that are, particularly on the Elon Musk-led social media platform X, objectifying women. In a formal letter to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, she emphasized the need for implementing necessary guardrails on AI chatbots like Grok to transform social media into a safer environment for women.
“I have sought immediate attention and intervention from the IT Minister concerning the increasing incidents of AI applications being used to sexualise and undress women through the unauthorized use of their images on social media,” Chaturvedi conveyed via a post on the platform X.
“It is crucial to establish guardrails through features like Grok that respect women's dignity; big tech companies must take responsibility. Furthermore, I wish that men who engage in such behavior were educated better at home and in schools to prevent them from becoming grotesque individuals in adulthood,” she elaborated.
In her letter shared on X, the Shiv Sena (UBT) MP highlighted a disturbing trend where individuals with fake accounts misuse the AI Grok feature to alter women's photos and issue prompts to reduce their clothing and sexualize them.
“This problem extends beyond just sharing images via fake accounts; it also impacts women who share their own pictures,” she noted.
Labeling it an “unacceptable and severe misuse of an AI function,” Chaturvedi criticized Grok for enabling such conduct through compliance with these requests.
She deemed this a “violation of women’s right to privacy” and a “criminal” act, stating that similar occurrences are “going unchecked” on other platforms as well.
“As an active member of the Standing Committee on IT & Communication, I urge you as a minister to strongly address this issue with X to ensure that safeguards are integrated into their AI applications, making the platform a safe haven for women.
“Our nation cannot remain a passive observer to the violation of women’s dignity in public and digital spaces with no repercussions under the guise of creativity and innovation. While we appreciate AI for its potential to enhance lives, we will not tolerate the spread of such demeaning behavior towards women,” declared the Rajya Sabha MP.
