Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) Shiv Sena-UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized Galgotias University on Wednesday amid the uproar regarding the presentation of a Chinese robodog at the India AI Impact Summit, labeling it as 'outright plagiarism' and insisting on an apology from the institution.
In a statement to IANS, Chaturvedi emphasized that the AI Summit is designed to showcase authentic innovations, explore new concepts, and develop educational models. She pointed out that artificial intelligence has the potential to streamline systems and enhance efficiency, contributing significantly to governance, education, and healthcare.
However, she condemned the act of taking credit for someone else's invention, particularly during a prestigious international summit. 'This is outright plagiarism, and it is not right for the country. During such a significant event with numerous distinguished international figures in attendance, one cannot falsely assert, 'This is our creation', only for it to be revealed by Chinese sources,' she stated.
Chaturvedi referred to the situation as a national disgrace, urging Galgotias University to acknowledge its false claims and issue an apology.
In response, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw indicated that corrective measures have been implemented regarding misconduct at the AI Summit expo. 'At the Artificial Intelligence (AI) exhibition, numerous commendable solutions were displayed. If any wrongdoing occurred, immediate action has been initiated. However, we should also recognize the other valuable AI solutions presented,' Vaishnaw told reporters.
Earlier that day, university professors attempted to clarify their position. They asserted that they never claimed the Chinese AI-powered robodog as their own, stating that the situation was exaggerated on social media and stemmed from a minor misinterpretation, which was 'unintentional and unintended.'
Professor Neha Singh explained that the controversy arose from miscommunication while she was discussing the robot's features. She clarified that her goal was to showcase how students were studying the robot and advancing its development, not to falsely assert ownership.
'I was outlining the capabilities of the robot, its attributes, and related details. Somewhere along the line, the message deviated slightly, and many aspects turned controversial. The aim was for students to learn from the robot and aid in its further development, contributing to a stronger and more Viksit Bharat. That was our entire intention. Unfortunately, due to the surrounding excitement, some details were misrepresented, leading to misunderstandings... We feel genuinely embarrassed about this incident occurring at the AI Summit, which was intended to highlight our students’ efforts,' she stated.
She further clarified that the robot was exhibited as part of a research and educational initiative. 'We brought the robot here for study and research. It was in the lab, and we showcased it here. After the controversy, I urge everyone to see what our students have created.'
