Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) In the midst of the ongoing turmoil surrounding a Chinese robotic dog being misrepresented as an Indian invention by a university in Noida, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared on Wednesday that measures have been initiated against the wrongdoing at the AI Summit expo.
“The Artificial Intelligence (AI) exhibition has showcased numerous commendable solutions. If any misconduct has occurred, prompt action has been implemented against it. Nevertheless, it’s essential to also highlight other impressive AI solutions,” Vaishnaw conveyed to the press.
This declaration from the Union Minister arrives amid political tensions concerning a robotic dog known as ‘Orion’ from China.
While the university attempted to dismiss the uproar as “overblown and misconstrued,” asserting that its objectives align with the government's mission, the situation provided the opposition with an opening to criticize the current administration.
The Congress party accused the government of squandering the chance to present India as a global leader in AI innovation, stating, “The Modi government has made the nation a joke on the world stage.”
Rahul Gandhi intensified the critique, branding the Summit a “chaotic PR display” and stating, “Instead of capitalizing on India’s talent and data, the AI summit has devolved into a chaotic PR event - Indian data is for sale, while Chinese products are on display.”
With the Information and Technology Minister affirming that actions have been taken against any wrongdoing, it is anticipated that the dispute will eventually subside.
High-level sources revealed that Galgotias University has been instructed to vacate the AI Expo. However, representatives from Galgotias University insisted they are remaining and have not received any orders to depart.
Neha Singh, a professor at the university, remarked, “We are here to display our students’ work and are not attempting to damage India’s reputation. Our university is in harmony with the Prime Minister’s vision and mission. We are committed to achieving an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”
The controversy ignited on Tuesday when a university representative referred to the robotic dog as an invention from their Centre of Excellence, detailing the robot’s features and technical innovations developed by the institute.
Shortly thereafter, the university faced backlash on social media, with users condemning its “embarrassing” attempt to present a foreign product as an indigenous creation, thereby harming both its own reputation and that of the nation.
