How Did Galgotias University Cause National Embarrassment and Global Ridicule?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 19 (NationPress) In the wake of a scandal involving Galgotias University surrounding a robotic dog showcased at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the organisers' responsibilities and urged for stringent measures, including fines, against the university. They asserted that the affair was not merely a source of national disgrace but also a cause for global mockery.
In an interview with IANS, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi remarked that the incident could have been averted with adequate examination prior to granting exhibition space.
“The manner in which Galgotias University was allocated such an extensive pavilion and subsequently sparked confusion in the name of innovation is regrettable. Their so-called innovation allowed the Chinese media to propagate misinformation. This could have been circumvented had proper evaluations and checklists been established for exhibitors before the AI Summit,” she stated.
Labeling the summit as a significant global occasion, Chaturvedi highlighted its purpose to present India’s potential to an international audience.
“This was a noteworthy global summit, with leaders from around the world present. Indian startups were offered a platform. Their actions detracted attention and generated unwarranted disputes. This situation is not only a source of national disgrace but also international ridicule. While the government has instructed them to vacate their stall, that is just one action. I believe the university should also face penalties for their conduct, which is utterly shameful,” she shared with IANS.
Supporting similar sentiments, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Anil Desai questioned the initial approval of such an exhibit. “If an AI model developed in China was showcased, wouldn't the authorities or organisers have been aware of it? The Government of India aimed for this demonstration to not only benefit Indian citizens but to attract global attention, with participants from significant nations in attendance. If strict actions are being pursued against institutions like Galgotias University, what about those who permitted their participation without proper verification?” Desai questioned.
In its initial official response to the uproar on Wednesday, the Centre expressed its desire for “authentic and true work” to be exhibited at such events, emphasizing a commitment to avoiding misinformation.
The Greater Noida-based university faced severe backlash on social media after Neha Singh, a Communications Professor, claimed in an interview with DD News that a robotic dog featured at the university's pavilion was developed by its “centre of excellence.” She referred to the robotic dog as “Orion.” However, it quickly became clear that the product was the Unitree Go2, created by China’s Unitree Robotics.
Neha Singh later attributed the incident to a miscommunication. Meanwhile, the university distanced itself from her comments, stating she was not authorized to engage with the media. In a statement, Galgotias University apologized for the misunderstanding and asserted that the representative was “ill-informed.”
“We at Galgotias University sincerely apologize for the confusion caused during the recent AI Summit. One of our pavilion representatives was ill-informed and, in her eagerness to be on camera, provided incorrect information without being authorized to speak to the press,” the institution stated.
