New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) Union Minister and prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) figure Piyush Goyal expressed his approval of the Madras High Court's division bench ruling on Tuesday, which allowed the ancient Deepastham ceremony of illuminating the holy lamp on the summit of Thiruparankundram Hill. He deemed this decision a significant victory for worshippers and a strong affirmation of their constitutional right to religious freedom.

During a press briefing at the BJP's central office in New Delhi, Goyal stated that the ruling effectively dismantled the Tamil Nadu government's assertions that endorsing the religious ceremony would lead to law and order issues in the state.

He noted that the High Court characterized these concerns as an "imaginary ghost" conjured by state officials, thereby unveiling what he labeled as the DMK-led government's tactics of appeasement.

In light of the court's remarks, Goyal emphasized that any potential disturbances could only arise if instigated by the state itself.

He described this as a grave condemnation of the DMK and the Congress-led INDI alliance, accusing them of intentionally politicizing a long-standing religious practice linked to Lord Murugan.

The Union Minister recalled that worshippers were forced to seek judicial intervention after the time-honored Deepam ritual was halted during the DMK administration.

A ruling by a single judge on December 1, 2025, had permitted the practice to proceed, but the state government opted to contest it.

According to Union Minister Goyal, the Madras High Court's division bench has now conclusively recognized Deepastham as a time-honored and significant practice deserving of legal protection.

He also condemned the impeachment motion against Justice G.R. Swaminathan initiated by MPs of the INDI alliance, viewing it as an attempt to intimidate the judiciary.

He claimed that constitutional authorities face threats whenever court rulings do not align with the political agenda of the Opposition-led alliance, thereby undermining democratic institutions.

Drawing parallels with assaults on other constitutional bodies, including the Election Commission, Goyal stated that the court's ruling has unveiled what he termed as the INDI alliance's "anti-constitutional conduct".

He affirmed that the nation would reject any politics rooted in appeasement or hostility towards religious beliefs.

In his closing statements, Goyal stated that the court's ruling serves as a wake-up call for the people of Tamil Nadu and the entire nation.

He expressed confidence that voters would respond appropriately to such political tactics, reiterating that India honors all faiths equally and that ancient customs and beliefs will continue to be protected by the Constitution and the Judiciary.

Point of View
