Will the Centre Install a Grand Statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at CSMT?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nagpur, Dec 9 (NationPress) Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Tuesday in the state assembly that the Union Government has sanctioned the installation of a magnificent statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
This declaration followed a request from Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Bhaskar Jadhav, who emphasized the need for a statue at CSMT, which honors the celebrated Maratha king, yet lacks his representation.
The timing of CM Fadnavis's statement is significant as it precedes the upcoming BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation elections, where both the BJP-led MahaYuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi are likely to leverage this issue.
During a recent presentation, CM Fadnavis confirmed that the grand statue will be positioned within the grounds of CSMT as part of the extensive redevelopment initiative at the historic railway station.
He assured that since the Centre has already made this decision, there is no requirement for a new state proposal, affirming its incorporation in the redevelopment master plan.
He mentioned that the response from the Union Minister of State for Railways regarding the statue pertains to the earlier CSTM. He reiterated that installation will follow the completion of the ongoing significant redevelopment project.
Previously, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant also voiced his concerns over the delays, stating, 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a national symbol. Since the station was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, we have insisted on erecting a statue. Although initial work commenced, it was halted due to jurisdictional and policy issues. Nonetheless, the same Railways managed to construct a mural of Sardar Patel at the Kevadiya station,” Sawant remarked.
