Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 20 (NationPress) A local court in Thiruvananthapuram has handed down a death sentence by hanging to 24-year-old Greeshma for the murder of her lover, Sharon Raj. Greeshma was found guilty of poisoning him with a toxic substance incorporated into ayurvedic medicine on October 14, 2022.

As the sentence was announced, Greeshma remained silent, while Sharon's parents, who were present in the courtroom, were visibly overcome with grief.

The court described the crime as atrocious and stated that the convict warranted no mercy. Despite the absence of eyewitnesses, the court commended the police investigation team for their meticulous work.

Sharon's parents were invited to witness the sentencing, underscoring the profound emotional impact of the case.

Additionally, Greeshma’s uncle, Nirmal Kumar, received a three-year prison sentence, while Greeshma’s mother, the second accused, was acquitted.

Sharon lost his life to the poisoning after a struggle of 11 days, passing away on October 25, 2022.

The tumultuous relationship between Greeshma and Sharon began as a close friendship but unraveled when Greeshma became engaged to another individual.

Evidence presented during the trial indicated that Greeshma wanted to terminate her relationship with Sharon, driven by an astrological prediction suggesting her first husband would die, paving the way for a tranquil second marriage.

WhatsApp conversations between the two illustrated Greeshma’s belief in this prediction, which Sharon reportedly sought to counter. Family members allege that Sharon had a symbolic marriage with Greeshma at Vettukadu Church and even placed 'sindoor' on her forehead.

Sharon’s family accused the Parasala Police of initially trying to obstruct the investigation, despite asserting that the murder was premeditated.

The case took a shocking turn when Greeshma attempted suicide by ingesting disinfectant while in police custody. This attempt, made just prior to evidence collection, was thwarted by police intervention, saving her life. A separate case was initiated against her for this suicide attempt.

Throughout the trial, despite the overwhelming evidence presented by the police, Greeshma maintained her innocence. The case attracted significant public attention, with many viewing the verdict as a measure of justice in this deeply tragic narrative.
