Ahmedabad, Aug 8 (AINS) The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, officially opened a newly established Urban Forest Park in the Lambha ward of Ahmedabad on Friday, alongside the unveiling of a statue commemorating the tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda.
This park, developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), aligns with the city's larger initiative to promote sustainable urban greenery.
Covering an area of 4,464 square metres and constructed at an investment of Rs 55 lakh, the park boasts approximately 8,000 indigenous trees, including varieties such as teak, bamboo, khair, arjun, and sissoo, all planted using the Miyawaki afforestation technique. A 250-metre walking pathway has also been created to encourage public wellness.
This initiative is a significant aspect of Ahmedabad's vision to transition from a Clean City to a Green City, driven by the leadership of the Chief Minister.
The Urban Forest Park marks a pivotal achievement in AMC’s ambitious 'Mission for Million Trees - 2025', which aims to plant 40 lakh trees throughout the city.
As of August 7, a total of 27,11,443 trees have been planted, representing a 66.77 percent accomplishment of the target. The remaining planting efforts are anticipated to accelerate.
So far, the AMC has successfully established 198 Oxygen Parks/Urban Forests across various city zones, employing dense plantation techniques. This includes 58 parks in the East Zone, 30 in the West, 29 in the North, 18 in the South, 32 in the North-West, and 31 in the South-West Zone.
Moreover, 310 public gardens are under the care of AMC in Ahmedabad, showcasing the city’s growing dedication to green infrastructure.
Over the past six years, the city’s Garden Department has conducted more than 1 crore tree plantations, with annual totals consistently rising – from 11.58 lakh trees in 2019–20 to 30.13 lakh trees so far in 2024-25. This ongoing initiative aims not only to enhance the city's environment but also to improve the quality of life for its residents through the creation of green urban areas.
