Gujarat Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia met Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the proposed expansion of Ahmedabad's Science City and Gujarat's broader push to build a world-class science, innovation and technology ecosystem. The meeting signals the state's intent to anchor its development strategy around emerging technologies and advanced scientific infrastructure.

What Was Discussed

According to people familiar with the meeting, the discussions centred on new projects and advanced facilities at Science City, as well as ways to give younger generations richer exposure to science and technology. Home Minister Shah reportedly provided guidance on proposed initiatives aimed at deepening youth engagement with science.

'Home Minister Amit Shah provided valuable guidance on the proposed projects, modern facilities and initiatives aimed at giving the younger generation greater exposure to science and technology,' sources said.

Gujarat's Technology Ambitions

The Science City talks come against the backdrop of Gujarat's expanding focus on frontier technologies. The state has been investing in areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cybersecurity, and smart infrastructure. At the Viksit Gujarat Summit 2026, Modhwadia participated in high-level discussions positioning technology and innovation as central pillars of the state's growth agenda.

People familiar with the broader vision said the goal is to develop Science City as a flagship institution that establishes Gujarat as a globally recognised hub for science and innovation.

A Pattern of High-Level Engagements

Thursday's meeting with Shah follows a series of recent interactions Modhwadia has held with central leadership. On 4 August, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House, where he expressed gratitude for the Centre's approval of a mega shipbuilding project in Porbandar — expected to attract an investment of approximately ₹27,500 crore.

In December 2025, Modhwadia had also met Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi, receiving guidance on the Prime Minister's vision for a developed India by 2047 and Gujarat's development goals. The frequency of these engagements reflects the state government's strategy of actively seeking central backing for its flagship projects.

About the Minister

Modhwadia, who also holds the portfolios of Forest and Environment and Climate Change, has been serving as Gujarat's Science and Technology Minister since October 2024. His sustained engagement with both the Prime Minister and Home Minister underlines the priority the state attaches to securing central support for its science and infrastructure agenda.
