Gandhinagar, April 21 (NationPress) The Gujarat Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel on Monday unveiled the commencement of state-wide procurement for chana (gram) and mustard (raydo) crops at Minimum Support Price (MSP), representing a crucial move towards protecting farmers’ earnings under the Centre’s Price Support Scheme (PSS).

Patel declared that the state government will acquire 3.36 lakh metric tonnes of chana valued at Rs 1,903 crore and 1.29 lakh metric tonnes of mustard worth Rs 767 crore directly from farmers.

He mentioned that over 3.36 lakh farmers have registered online to sell their chana produce, while more than 1.18 lakh farmers have signed up for mustard sales.

“To streamline the procurement process, 179 purchase centres have been established across the state for chana, and 87 centres for mustard,” the minister noted.

He emphasized that procurement will follow the MSP rates authorized by the Union government — Rs 5,650 per quintal for chana and Rs 5,950 per quintal for mustard during the 2024-25 Rabi season.

“This initiative to purchase crops at MSP aims to avert financial losses for farmers and elevate their income, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of enhancing farmer welfare,” he added.

Patel revealed that the state has officially commenced MSP procurement operations starting today.

In Gujarat, chana and mustard are vital Rabi crops cultivated by numerous farmers, particularly in the Saurashtra, North Gujarat, and central regions.

For the 2024–25 Rabi season, over 3.36 lakh farmers statewide have registered online to sell their chana, while more than 1.18 lakh farmers have signed up for mustard.

Chana is predominantly grown in districts like Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan, and various parts of Saurashtra due to favorable agro-climatic conditions and lower water needs.

Mustard is mainly cultivated in North and Central Gujarat, with a notable presence in districts such as Mehsana, Ahmedabad, and Gandhinagar.
