Gujarat to launch tourist police stations in Gir Somnath, Dwarka, Dang
Gujarat will establish dedicated tourist police stations in three key districts — Gir Somnath, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Dang — as part of a state-wide push to enhance visitor safety and convenience, following a high-level review chaired by State Police Chief Dr K.L.N. Rao in Gandhinagar on 29 April. The initiative, to be implemented under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, marks the first phase of a broader plan to modernise police services at major tourist destinations across the state.
What the First Phase Covers
The three districts selected for the first phase — Gir Somnath, home to the iconic Somnath temple and the Gir National Park; Devbhumi Dwarka, a prominent pilgrimage site; and Dang, a tribal and eco-tourism district — collectively draw millions of domestic and international visitors annually. At locations where police outposts already exist, authorities will upgrade current facilities into ultra-modern tourist police stations, making optimal use of available resources rather than building from scratch.
Key Features of the Initiative
Officials at the meeting discussed the introduction of specially designed uniforms for personnel deployed at these stations, along with a unique logo for police vehicles, enabling tourists to easily identify and approach officers for assistance. At major tourist sites, container-based help desks and kiosks will be installed to provide immediate support and on-ground information to visitors. All Superintendents of Police have been instructed to develop a central interactive tourist police application, aimed at offering tourists access to essential information and security-related services on a single platform.
Infrastructure and Manpower Plans
The meeting stressed the need to ensure adequate manpower at each tourist police station, alongside procurement of new vehicles and development of the necessary infrastructure to support operations. The proposals were formulated in line with the recommendations of the DG and IG Conference, signalling institutional backing for the rollout. The meeting was attended by the IGP (Administration) and Superintendents of Police from all three districts.
