Gujarat is set to establish a ₹295 crore integrated Spine Institute, Sports Injury Centre, and Rehabilitation Centre at Ahmedabad Medicity, positioning the state as a national hub for spine care and sports medicine ahead of its bids to host the Commonwealth Games 2030 and the Olympic Games 2036. The project was reviewed during a high-level meeting in Gandhinagar on Wednesday, 17 June, chaired by State Health Minister Praful Pansheriya.

What the facility will include

The proposed complex will bring together facilities for complex spine surgeries, a dedicated sports injury centre, and a world-class rehabilitation centre under one roof. According to officials, the integrated setup is designed to consolidate advanced treatment, rehabilitation, training, and research at a single location in Ahmedabad.

The review meeting was attended by Dr Piyush Mittal, Director of the Government Spine Institute, along with senior officials of the Health Department and the Project Implementation Unit (PIU).

The Olympic and CWG connection

Pansheriya linked the project directly to Gujarat's sporting ambitions. 'Through the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat is striving to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the Olympic Games in 2036. This institute will prove to be a boon for the state's athletes by ensuring that world-class medical and rehabilitation facilities are available within Gujarat itself,' he said.

The minister added that the state's vision extends beyond treatment alone. 'Our goal is not merely to provide treatment but to make Gujarat a global hub for sports medicine and spine care capable of meeting future challenges,' Pansheriya said.

Academic and research component

The facility will also house colleges equipped with advanced educational infrastructure to train super-specialist healthcare professionals. Special provisions are planned to facilitate world-class research in spine care and sports medicine, with the aim of attracting experts from India and abroad.

This academic dimension sets the project apart from a conventional hospital expansion, signalling an intent to build long-term institutional capacity rather than just add beds.

Gujarat's spine surgery record

Pansheriya highlighted a notable clinical milestone, congratulating medical teams for maintaining zero infection cases in spine surgeries across Gujarat over the past three years. 'In the last three years, not a single infection case has been reported in spine surgeries in Gujarat,' he said.

The minister directed PIU and departmental officials to finalise project timelines and ensure expeditious implementation without compromising quality standards. With the Commonwealth Games and Olympics bids providing a hard deadline for readiness, the pace of execution will be closely watched by both health administrators and the sporting community.
