Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Tuesday, 29 July used the sidelines of the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow to promote Ahmedabad as the host city for the Centennial Commonwealth Games 2030, saying a dedicated Ahmedabad Experience Centre in Glasgow would offer athletes and sports federations a preview of the city's infrastructure and culture. Sanghavi also reaffirmed Ahmedabad's ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

The Glasgow Visit and Experience Centre

Sanghavi said his delegation is in Glasgow not merely as observers but as active learners. 'We are on ground zero. Our team is participating in the training sessions every morning,' he said, adding that the Ahmedabad Experience Centre was set to be inaugurated the following evening.

The centre is designed to introduce sports federations and athletes from across the world to Ahmedabad's culture, facilities, and overall sports ecosystem. 'The sports federations and athletes from all over the world will also become guests of the Ahmedabad Experience Centre and learn about the culture of Ahmedabad, the infrastructure, and what kind of facilities are there in Gujarat and Bharat,' Sanghavi said.

Crediting Modi's Infrastructure Legacy

Sanghavi attributed Gujarat's sports readiness to the infrastructure built during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat. He argued that this foundation enabled the state to organise what he described as 'the most prestigious National Games to date' in under 100 days of preparation.

'If I talk about infrastructure, the creation of an excellent sports infrastructure in Gujarat began when Modiji was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Because of this, we were able to deliver the most prestigious National Games to date in less than a hundred days,' Sanghavi said.

Ahmedabad's 2030 CWG and 2036 Olympic Ambitions

Sanghavi described the 2030 Commonwealth Games — the centenary edition of the event — as a matter of national pride. 'It is a matter of pride for all of us that the centenary event of the Commonwealth is going to be held in Ahmedabad, India. The whole world is watching,' he said.

Beyond 2030, Ahmedabad is positioning itself as a candidate for the 2036 Summer Olympics. The state has already hosted international tournaments including the Asian Volleyball Tournament, World Cup matches, and basketball qualifying fixtures, reinforcing its credentials as a multi-sport venue.

Open Infrastructure for All Athletes

Sanghavi also extended an open invitation to athletes across India, emphasising that Ahmedabad's facilities are accessible for training regardless of which state a player represents. 'Ahmedabad is always open to all athletes from my country. Any player from any state can use our infrastructure for practice,' he said, after cheering for Indian boxers competing in the quarterfinals at CWG 2026.

With the 2030 edition still four years away, the Glasgow visit signals that Ahmedabad's preparations are already underway at the organisational level, with the city aiming to set a benchmark for the Games' centennial milestone.
