Gandhinagar, Dec 8 (NationPress) Gujarat is leading a groundbreaking initiative to develop smart blue harbours that leverage artificial intelligence (AI), 5G connectivity, and sustainable infrastructure. This innovative strategy aims to transform India's maritime economy and solidify the state's status as a global coastal leader, as reported by officials on Monday.

These advanced fishing harbours are evolving from mere docking stations into vital centers for livelihood creation, export enhancement, community growth, and a robust blue economy.

This transformative shift is gaining traction nationally following a significant policy announcement from the Union government.

The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation have established a strategic alliance to launch a Technical Cooperation Programme.

This initiative will pilot world-class blue harbours at Jakhau in Gujarat, Vanakbara in Diu, and Karaikal in Puducherry, creating models for sustainable and technology-driven fisheries development nationwide.

India is accelerating this transformation through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which has allocated Rs 452.32 crore to expedite integrated fisheries infrastructure.

Jakhau, a key fisheries hub on Gujarat's western coast, is currently undergoing extensive modernization.

Managed by the Commissioner of Fisheries, the harbour is being enhanced with advanced landing facilities, repair systems, cold-chain networks, and improved jetty operations.

The enhancements under the Blue Revolution initiative are expected to increase operational efficiency, enhance livelihoods, and support the state's long-term vision for sustainable marine development.

The upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC), set for mid-January 2026 in Rajkot, will showcase the coastal and fisheries strengths of Kutch and Saurashtra.

This conference will gather policymakers, industry leaders, technology experts, and key stakeholders to delve into emerging trends like AI-driven marine solutions, 5G-enabled monitoring of fishing fleets, sustainable harvesting techniques, global best practices, and fresh investment prospects.

As Gujarat positions itself at the forefront of India’s blue economy, the state’s smart harbour model—founded on technology, innovation, and social inclusion—aims to shape national strategy, bolster food security, and enhance India’s presence in the global seafood marketplace.
