Halwara Airport in Ludhiana became operational on Friday, 16 May 2025, as the inaugural flight touched down at the long-awaited facility, marking a turning point for Punjab's aviation infrastructure and industrial connectivity. The airport, decades in the making, is expected to unlock new trade and export corridors for one of India's most productive manufacturing belts.

A Historic First Landing

Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu was among those who boarded the inaugural flight to Halwara Airport, accompanied by Members of Parliament Vikramjit Sahney and Rajinder Gupta. In a post on X, Bittu described the moment as historic, saying: 'Fulfilling a 30-year-old demand, this operationalization is a massive boost for our local industry and economic growth. Huge thanks to PM Narendra Modi Ji for this visionary gift to Punjab. The sky is the limit for Ludhiana's trade and exports.'

Why Halwara Matters for Punjab's Economy

Ludhiana is Punjab's largest industrial hub, internationally recognised for textiles, hosiery, bicycle manufacturing, and engineering goods. Industry stakeholders had long flagged the absence of a functional airport as a structural bottleneck, hampering business travel, export logistics, and investor access. The operationalisation of Halwara Airport is expected to directly address these gaps, drawing investment and easing the movement of goods and executives. It will also serve residents of several neighbouring districts who previously had to travel to Amritsar or Chandigarh for air connectivity.

Centre's Broader Connectivity Push in Punjab

The airport inauguration follows a series of infrastructure moves by the Centre in the state. A day earlier, on Thursday, Bittu flagged off the Amrit Bharat Express from Amritsar Junction railway station to New Jalpaiguri — a weekly non-AC service designed for common passengers, offering long-distance travel at economical fares. The train strengthens rail links between Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal.

Punjab's railway budget allocation has been raised to ₹5,673 crore for 2026-27, with projects worth over ₹26,000 crore currently under execution across the state, according to Bittu.

Station Redevelopment and Chandigarh Upgrade

Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 30 railway stations in Punjab are being redeveloped with world-class passenger amenities. Major stations in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Mohali, Anandpur Sahib, and Muktsar are undergoing extensive modernisation. The redevelopment of Chandigarh railway station — being undertaken at a cost of over ₹450 crore by the Rail Land Development Authority — remains one of the flagship infrastructure projects in the region.

What Comes Next

With Halwara Airport now operational, attention will shift to the launch of commercial routes and the pace at which airlines scale up services from the new terminal. Sustained air connectivity, rather than symbolic inaugural flights, will determine whether the airport delivers on its promise for Ludhiana's exporters and industrial community.
