Chandigarh, April 25 (NationPress) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday highlighted the vital role of ‘khaps’ in society, asserting that they have historically been a source of value for the youth.
He pointed out that ‘khaps’ can significantly aid young individuals in battling drug addiction, a pressing challenge that negatively affects the entire community.
The Chief Minister guaranteed that any assistance required by the ‘khaps’ to fight drug addiction would be extended by him or the government. Khaps, or local community organizations, have frequently served as quasi-judicial entities, imposing severe penalties based on outdated customs and traditions.
Saini was speaking to representatives of ‘khaps’ from Haryana at the Public Works Department (PWD) rest house in Jind after launching the Cyclothon Yatra. The Chief Minister encouraged the ‘khap’ representatives to initiate a campaign aimed at keeping youth away from drugs and to support the objective of achieving a drug-free Haryana.
He stated that while the Cyclothon Yatra is part of a larger awareness initiative, its main goal is to eradicate drug abuse. “We must protect our youth from the detrimental effects of drug addiction,” declared the Chief Minister. “It is essential to involve as many young people as possible in sports, enabling them to win maximum medals and bring pride to Haryana, both nationally and internationally.”
‘Khap’ representatives expressed appreciation to the Chief Minister for inviting them and bestowing respect and honour upon them. They also commended his humble and cheerful demeanor. They shared their thoughts on various social issues, with the Chief Minister listening carefully and promising action on all matters. The discussions included various requests from gram panchayats, such as a plea to open registration on the Meri Fasal Mera Byora portal.
Among those present at the event were Deputy Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha, Krishan Lal Middha, legislator Ramkumar Gautam, and other representatives of ‘khaps’.
