Chennai, Jan 16 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a warning for substantial rainfall across nine districts in Tamil Nadu on January 18 and January 19.
The districts that may be impacted include Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari.
The weather authorities have cautioned fishermen in Tamil Nadu to refrain from going out to sea, as turbulent weather with wind speeds of 35-45 km/h, potentially gusting up to 55 km/h, is forecasted along the southern Tamil Nadu coastline, the Comorin region, and adjacent areas of the Gulf of Mannar over the next couple of days.
The RMC has linked the impending rainfall to a shift in the wind flow over the ocean. Several coastal districts, including Chennai, are also predicted to experience light to moderate rainfall in the upcoming days. The increased moisture levels in the sea, combined with the modified wind patterns, are anticipated to sustain rainfall activity throughout the state.
Weather officials have pointed out that the northeast monsoon, which commenced on October 1, has not completely withdrawn from Tamil Nadu. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in various coastal regions.
Chennai and its neighboring areas have already witnessed light showers, which are likely to persist in the coming days. The RMC has also forecasted above-normal rainfall levels in Tamil Nadu until January 23.
Maximum temperatures are anticipated to fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius below the average, with temperatures ranging between 26 degrees and 32 degrees from January 17 to January 23.
Tamil Nadu reported a 14 percent surplus in rainfall during the northeast monsoon season, recording 447 mm compared to the seasonal average of 393 mm.
Chennai experienced 845 mm of rainfall, which is 16 percent above normal, while Coimbatore noted a significant 47 percent increase.
The cyclone Fengal, which impacted Tamil Nadu from November 29 to December 1, caused extensive damage throughout the state. The cyclone led to 12 casualties and submerged 211,139 hectares of agricultural land.
The Tamil Nadu government has classified this event as a severe natural disaster. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has requested Rs 2,000 crore in interim relief from the National Disaster Response Fund. Although the Central government has approved Rs 944 crore, the state is seeking an additional financial aid package exceeding Rs 6,000 crore for relief, rehabilitation, and infrastructure reconstruction.
