New Delhi, Aug 6 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a red alert for Uttarkashi and several other districts in Uttarakhand, cautioning residents of heavy to very heavy rainfall in these areas.
The forecast also indicates that Delhi-NCR might experience light to very light showers throughout the upcoming week.
In addition, an orange alert has been activated for parts of western Uttar Pradesh, where similar heavy rainfall is anticipated.
Speaking to IANS, IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava stated: "Over the next 24 hours, we expect heavy to very heavy rain at multiple locations. Specifically, Uttarkashi district is likely to see intense rainfall today. Due to the persistent heavy rainfall in the last few days, we have issued a red alert for several districts in Uttarakhand."
He highlighted that rainfall activity has been significant across the region.
"In the past 24 hours, Haridwar recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with 22 centimeters measured on Wednesday morning.
"For Delhi and its surrounding areas, mild weather disturbances are expected.
“For Delhi-NCR, we anticipate light to very light rainfall over the next week, primarily isolated. These showers may occasionally be accompanied by thunderstorms. Currently, the likelihood of intense rainfall events remains low. We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed," Srivastava informed IANS.
He emphasized the importance of following safety protocols during this active monsoon phase.
“In these weather conditions, it’s crucial to adhere to all guidelines issued by disaster management authorities. Residents should avoid waterlogged and flooded areas, steer clear of landslide-prone regions, and maintain a safe distance from mountainous zones. Most importantly, the public should stay informed and heed instructions from local authorities," he added.
The IMD scientist also outlined the rainfall forecast for other regions of the country.
“In Uttar Pradesh, an orange alert has been declared due to the expectation of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Similarly, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala in south India are likely to experience significant rainfall,” he said.
"Warnings for heavy rainfall are also in place for areas in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and throughout eastern North India. Furthermore, regions in Punjab and Haryana are expected to see intense showers. Central India may also be subjected to thunderstorms, for which alerts have been issued as well."
