Additionally, light to moderate rain, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is anticipated in isolated areas throughout Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during this timeframe.
With the impending rain starting May 7, a slight decrease in temperatures is expected over the coming days.
The RMC also forecasts moderate thunderstorms and showers in various regions including Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts.
On Sunday, Chennai city and its neighboring areas faced heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Locations such as Egmore, Perambur, Nungambakkam, Meenambakkam, Triplicane, Tondiarpet, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, Velachery, Ambattur, and Avadi reported varying degrees of rain.
According to the RMC, Nungambakkam received 11 mm of rain, while Meenambakkam recorded 8 mm on Sunday (May 4).
The Met Department has observed that a north-south trough is currently stretching from a cyclonic circulation over northern Gangetic West Bengal to north coastal Andhra Pradesh, passing through coastal Odisha at approximately 0.9 km above mean sea level. For the next couple of days, light to moderate rain, with thunderstorms and gusty winds expected to reach 30-40 km/h, is likely across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Heavy rainfall is also projected for some southern and delta districts, such as Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, where certain areas may experience intense rain.
Experts in meteorology suggest that weather models indicate the system may shift towards Odisha and West Bengal, drawing winds from the land.
Tamil Nadu has recorded 14% more rainfall during the recent northeast monsoon, achieving 447 mm compared to an average of 393 mm. Chennai alone has received 845 mm of rain, which is a 16% increase over the seasonal norm, while Coimbatore saw a 47% rise compared to its average.
These predictions follow the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal, which impacted Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 29 to December 1, causing heavy rains. The cyclone resulted in the loss of 12 lives, flooded 211,139 hectares of agricultural land, and affected 6.9 million families, amounting to nearly 15 million people. In response, the Central Government has approved an additional ₹522.34 crores in relief assistance for Tamil Nadu, while Puducherry has received ₹33.06 crores as part of the relief strategy.
