Punjab and Haryana High Court Grants Bail to Controversial Godman Rampal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, April 8 (NationPress) The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted bail to the notorious leader of the Satlok Ashram sect, Rampal, who is currently serving a life sentence related to the 2014 riots and violence at the Karantha Ashram located in Barwala, Hisar. He has been detained in Central Jail in Hisar, approximately 200 km away from Chandigarh.
“The High Court’s bail order will be forwarded to the relevant court. Subsequently, the bail bond will be filed there, leading to Rampal's release from jail,” stated Umesh Kumar, the Superintendent of Central Jail, during a media briefing.
At the age of 74, Rampal was apprehended due to a contempt of court case linked to a man’s murder in 2006, alongside a sedition case associated with the significant violence that occurred in 2014.
A Division Bench comprising Justices G.S. Gill and Ramesh Kumari approved the regular bail plea, albeit with conditions, concerning the charges of sedition and other serious allegations against him.
During the proceedings, it was highlighted that testimonies from around 450 witnesses had been documented and that the trial had advanced significantly. Given the prolonged judicial process, it was argued that regular bail should be granted.
Upon reviewing the arguments from both parties, the Division Bench concluded the petition and decided to permit Rampal's regular bail.
However, the court imposed certain conditions for the bail. Previously, last year, the High Court had suspended Rampal's life sentence, which had been issued seven years prior in connection with the deaths of five of his disciples.
On October 11, 2018, a Hisar court convicted Rampal for murder, wrongful confinement, and criminal conspiracy following the death of a follower, Raj Bala, due to asphyxia.
In November 2014, Haryana Police filed charges against Rampal and his sect officials after they defied the High Court’s directives to appear in a contempt of court case.
To execute Rampal’s arrest, both state and central security forces were deployed. A 10-day operation culminated in his arrest on November 19, 2014.
