Shimla, July 6 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Sukhu, has formally requested the Central government to assess the potential of initiating the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via the Shipki-La route within the state.
In a correspondence addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister highlighted that the Shipki-La area has historically functioned as a crucial Indo-Tibetan trade path, existing long before contemporary borders.
He noted its significance as a cultural link for Tibetan Buddhism and as an ancient pilgrimage route that showcases India's lasting civilizational connections to Kailash and Mansarovar.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the Kinnaur region, characterized by its semi-arid climate and situated in a rain shadow zone similar to Spiti, experiences fewer monsoon interruptions, thus ensuring the route remains accessible throughout the majority of the year.
Moreover, he explained that the journey from Shipki-La through Gartok toward Darchen and Mansarovar is notably shorter on the Tibetan side, while also providing a more stable and clear corridor, making it ideal for long-term pilgrimage and cross-border connectivity.
The Chief Minister reiterated that Himachal Pradesh already possesses road connectivity to Shipki-La via Rampur and Pooh.
He emphasized that with targeted development of base camps and supportive infrastructure, this route could be effectively integrated into the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra framework.
Furthermore, he stressed that the opening of this route would greatly enhance the socio-economic conditions of the tribal communities in Kinnaur, aligning with the government's goals for border development and tourism enhancement under the Vibrant Village Programme.
The Chief Minister assured that the state government would provide all necessary logistical and administrative support to the Central government should the Shipki-La route be opened for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
