Shimla, July 25 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh, Jairam Thakur, accompanied by state Members of Parliament, the BJP's Himachal Pradesh unit president, and MLAs representing disaster-stricken regions, met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the national capital on Friday. They presented the severe damage inflicted upon the state.

The delegation requested substantial financial assistance for reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts. The documentation provided by former Chief Minister Thakur detailed the extensive losses of both private and government properties due to the calamity.

Thakur highlighted that the disaster has severely impacted the assembly constituencies of Seraj, Nachan, Karsog, and Dharampur in Mandi district, along with numerous areas in Chamba.

Financial losses have exceeded Rs 1,200 crore, with over 50 lives lost, including 42 fatalities occurring on the night of June 30 alone.

More than 700 homes were completely destroyed, while nearly 1,000 houses were partially ruined, rendering them uninhabitable.

Additionally, over 1,000 cattle sheds were lost, resulting in the death of around 1,000 livestock. Agricultural land and gardens have also been devastated.

“The destruction has severely affected the livelihoods of local residents. There is an urgent need for significant support for those impacted by the disaster,” Thakur conveyed to the Finance Minister, who promised to assist Himachal Pradesh in every feasible manner.

Prior to this meeting, the BJP delegation had discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Water Resources Minister C.R. Paatil, along with party national President J.P. Nadda.

Addressing the current situation in the hill state, the Leader of Opposition remarked that the state is undergoing a catastrophe.

“The citizens are enduring the wrath of nature. During such crises, the government must prioritize the welfare of those affected by the disaster. Instead of alleviating their suffering, the government seems to be inflicting more pain,” Thakur added.
