Shimla, June 26 (NationPress) The search operations led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) ramped up on Thursday in a bid to locate the individuals missing after devastating flash floods caused by cloudbursts in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. During these efforts, officials confirmed the recovery of three additional bodies and the successful rescue of one individual.
A group of approximately 10 workers connected to the Indira Priyadarshini Hydroelectric Project were reportedly swept away by the strong currents in Manuni Khad the previous day.
The NDRF team commenced their search and rescue mission under the supervision of 14 NDRF Commandant Baljinder Singh. The affected region was systematically divided into two sectors, where rescuers managed to recover three bodies and rescue one person who had fled into the upstream forests to avoid the flooding.
The day prior saw the recovery of four bodies, with nearly 170 workers safely brought to safety by local authorities.
“Our operations are being conducted in close coordination with local administrative officials, and we are exerting every effort to locate those who are unaccounted for,” the NDRF stated.
In light of the ongoing crisis, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu has instructed all Deputy Commissioners to remain vigilant and ensure that they provide continuous support to the public in response to the situation, especially considering the adverse weather conditions. In the last 24 hours, Himachal Pradesh has experienced three cloudbursts, nine flash floods, and three landslides, leading to five fatalities and one injury. Reports indicate that three individuals in Kullu district and five to six in Kangra district remain missing, while 21 stranded individuals have been successfully evacuated, according to government sources.
Furthermore, two National Highways—505 and 03—remain obstructed at several locations due to landslides. Following the cloudburst at Majhan Nullaha in the Sainj Valley, downstream hydroelectric projects including Sainj, Parvati, and Larji have been temporarily shut down as a precautionary measure.
