Imphal, June 26 (NationPress) The northeastern state of Manipur has officially surpassed the 200 mark in total active cases of Covid-19, with an additional 13 new cases identified on Thursday across four districts, according to officials.
Officials from the State Health Department reported that 40 samples were analyzed on Thursday, resulting in 13 positive cases spread across four districts: Imphal West (6), Imphal East (5), and one case each from Bishnupur and Thoubal.
Out of the total confirmed cases of 202 reported on Thursday, 137 originated from Imphal West district, 48 from Imphal East, 8 from Thoubal, 5 from Bishnupur, 2 from Tengnoupal, and one each from Kakching and Chandel districts.
Aside from the tribal-populated districts of Tengnoupal and Chandel, the remaining five districts are located in the Imphal Valley region. Currently, the positivity rate for Covid-19 in Manipur stands at 32.5 percent.
A total of 135 individuals with confirmed Covid cases are currently in home quarantine.
The state recorded its first Covid case on June 9, when a 23-year-old woman tested positive, marking the initial case in this current wave of the virus.
Director of Manipur Health Services, Chambo Gonmei, noted that the woman is from Bishnupur district and exhibited symptoms akin to Covid-19.
Gonmei urged residents to remain vigilant, considering the infection's spread in various regions of the country.
Health experts have attributed this sudden rise to several factors, including the easing of Covid-appropriate behavior, a decrease in booster vaccinations, and the emergence of new variants that are known to be more contagious but exhibit milder symptoms. Additionally, the arrival of the monsoon season has contributed, as people tend to stay indoors more, creating a favorable environment for the virus to spread.
In response, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla held a review meeting regarding Covid-19 at the Raj Bhavan, emphasizing the necessity of proactive measures, sufficient medical infrastructure, and community awareness to ensure the state is prepared to manage any potential surge in cases.
The meeting included Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, senior medical officials from the Health Department, and various authorities.
This review was conducted following recent directives from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare regarding enhanced readiness amid growing concerns of a possible resurgence of Covid-19.
A Raj Bhavan official indicated that health officials provided the Governor with updates on the state's preparedness, including diagnostics, protective equipment, oxygen supply, ICU and isolation wards, essential medications, and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme-Integrated Health Information Platform portal.
