Shimla, April 14 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, conducted a review on Tuesday of the advancements made in the 450-MW Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project situated along the Satluj River during his two-day inspection visit to Kinnaur district. He urged officials to ensure that the initial phase is finalized by January 2027.
Upon his arrival, he evaluated the powerhouse, surge shaft, and barrage areas, engaging in discussions with engineers and construction workers on-site. The Chief Minister instructed officials to accelerate the construction process to meet the January 2027 deadline for the first phase, with a goal to complete the entire project by the conclusion of this fiscal year.
He emphasized the state government's dedication to enhancing clean energy infrastructure and highlighted the necessity of fostering sustainable development within Himachal Pradesh. This project is anticipated to significantly bolster the state's power generation capacity, enhance energy independence, and support environmentally sustainable growth.
Despite facing various obstacles, the state government has assured proactive measures through reinforced monitoring and improved project planning. Continuous technical interventions are being implemented to tackle site-specific challenges and sustain construction progress. As of now, approximately 75 percent of the project work has been accomplished.
The Chief Minister noted that essential civil works, including the barrage, headrace tunnel, and powerhouse structures, are progressing well, while electro-mechanical tasks are advancing in a phased approach, in line with the overall construction timeline.
Upon completion, the project is expected to yield around 1,579 million units of electricity per year, significantly enhancing the state's energy framework and grid stability. Furthermore, it is projected to contribute nearly Rs 900 crore annually to Himachal Pradesh's economy.
