Hyderabad, April 17 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy, declared on Friday that this day will be etched in memory as a significant milestone in Indian history.
“This day will be remembered as a historic moment in our nation's journey, as under the guidance of Shri Rahul Gandhi Ji, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and Shri Mallikarjun Kharge Ji, we have united various democratic forces and opposition leaders to avert a potential national crisis,” the Chief Minister stated on X after the defeat of the bill aimed at amending the Women’s Reservation Act in the Lok Sabha.
“I express my gratitude to the leaders of numerous allied parties who stood together and showed resilience under pressure to reject these contentious bills, including Thiru MK Stalin garu, Ms Mamata Banerjee Ji, Shri Akhilesh Yadav Ji, Shri Sharad Pawar Ji, Shri Uddhav Thackeray Ji, Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav Ji, Shri Hemant Soren Ji, Shri Farooq Abdullah Ji, Shri Naveen Patnaik Ji, Shri Arvind Kejriwal Ji, and the leaders from the Communist parties, among others,” Revanth Reddy wrote.
The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, required a two-thirds majority for passage but failed to achieve that.
The proposed legislation saw 298 Members of Parliament voting in favor while 230 voted against it.
Following the defeat of the first bill, two other bills concerning delimitation and an increase in Lok Sabha seats were not brought to vote, as the Centre claimed they were intrinsically linked to the women's reservation legislation.
Revanth Reddy had previously voiced strong opposition to the connection between women’s reservation and the issues of delimitation and expanding Lok Sabha seats.
He also addressed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging for a national political consensus regarding the increase of Lok Sabha seats, advocating for a hybrid model, and calling for the immediate enactment of women's reservation without it being tied to the increase in legislative seats.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the matters of women’s reservation, national delimitation, and the increase in Lok Sabha seats are separate issues, yet there appears to be a notion being instilled in the public that these matters are necessarily interconnected.
He reiterated Congress's full support for the Women’s Reservation Bill and urged for its prompt implementation for the Lok Sabha, maintaining the current 543 seats, as well as for all State Assemblies.
