New Delhi, Nov 3 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu on Monday praised the Indian women’s cricket team for making history by clinching the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, referring to it as a “watershed moment” for Indian sports.
“Heartfelt congratulations to each member of the Indian women’s cricket team for winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025! This is the first time they have achieved this remarkable feat. Their consistent performance has finally yielded a well-deserved outcome. This watershed moment is set to elevate women’s cricket to even greater heights. I truly admire how these players have made India proud,” President Murmu shared on X shortly after India secured a 52-run win against South Africa in the final.
India claimed their inaugural Women’s ODI World Cup title at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, triumphing over South Africa in front of a jubilant crowd. All-rounder Deepti Sharma played a pivotal role in this historic win, delivering an impressive all-round performance with a score of 58 runs and capturing five wickets (5/39).
After being put to bat, India capitalized on Deepti’s fifty and strong contributions from the top order to set a target of 298/7 in 50 overs. The South African response, led by captain Laura Wolvaardt’s spirited innings, concluded at 246 in 45.3 overs, as the Indian bowlers remained poised to etch their names in history.
This victory marks India as only the third nation, following England and Australia, to have won both the men’s and women’s ODI World Cups.
The win is particularly momentous as the Indian team faced significant challenges, having lost three consecutive matches in the group stage but narrowly advancing to the semifinals. They then stunned Australia and decisively overcame South Africa in the final.
Wolvaardt fought tirelessly, hitting boundaries with ease, yet her teammates struggled to build substantial partnerships that could challenge India’s score. Earlier, Tazmin Brits’ run-out by Amanjot Kaur halted South Africa’s momentum after a promising 50-run opening partnership.
After a lengthy wait, India has finally secured a women’s world title, and this victory is poised to inspire countless young cricketers to follow in the footsteps of these champions.
