HM Shah Calls on Northeastern Chief Ministers to Intensify Efforts Against Drug Threats

Agartala, Dec 21 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday called upon the Chief Ministers of eight northeastern states to intensify their efforts in combating the smuggling and other drug-related issues in the region.
Speaking at the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) here, the Home Minister emphasized the need to eliminate the stigma associated with the northeastern states concerning drug-related activities.
He stated, “Significant efforts have been made to tackle drug issues, but even greater actions must be taken by the Chief Ministers and all relevant parties.”
Shah mentioned that the central government has launched nationwide initiatives to realize the vision of a “Nasha Mukt Bharat” (drug-free India) and stressed that the northeastern states should actively participate in this mission to achieve a drug-free region.
Additionally, the Home Minister urged the Chief Ministers to prioritize the effective execution of three new criminal laws: the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
He announced that a meeting would be held with the Chief Ministers in February next year to evaluate the progress and implementation of these three new laws.
Amit Shah highlighted that since the Modi government assumed power at the Centre, 20 accords have been signed for peace and stability in the northeastern states, and 10,574 members of various militant organizations have surrendered across the region.
“A comprehensive approach, engaging state police, the Army, Assam Rifles, and other Central Armed Police Forces, has been initiated to ensure peace and combat unlawful activities in the northeastern region,” the Home Minister added.
He also mentioned that long-standing inter-state border disputes in the northeastern states are being resolved amicably.
The DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region) Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and his deputy Sukanta Majumdar also spoke at the plenary session.
Chief Ministers from northeastern states, including Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam), Pema Khandu (Arunachal Pradesh), N. Biren Singh (Manipur), Lalduhoma (Mizoram), Neiphiu Rio (Nagaland), Prem Singh Tamang (Sikkim), and Manik Saha (Tripura), along with the Governors of these states, attended the NEC meeting.
