HM Shah Calls on NE CMs to Intensify Efforts Against Drug Threats

Agartala, Dec 21 (NationPress) On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah called upon the Chief Ministers of the eight northeastern states to increase their focus on tackling the smuggling and other drug-related threats in the region.

During the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), the Home Minister stated that the negative perceptions regarding drugs-related activities in the northeastern states need to be eradicated.

"Significant efforts have been made to combat drug-related issues, yet there is a pressing need for the Chief Ministers and all stakeholders to enhance their initiatives," he remarked.

He mentioned that the Central Government has launched widespread campaigns aimed at achieving a “Nasha Mukt Bharat” (drugs-free India) and urged that the northeastern states should contribute actively towards making the region free from drugs.

The Home Minister also encouraged the Chief Ministers to prioritize the effective execution of three new criminal laws -- the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

He announced plans to meet with the Chief Ministers in February next year to review the progress and implementation of these new laws.

Amit Shah highlighted that since the Narendra Modi administration took office at the Centre, 20 agreements have been reached to foster peace and stability in the northeastern states, with 10,574 members of various militant organizations surrendering across the region.

"A comprehensive strategy involving state police forces, the Army, Assam Rifles, and other Central Armed Police Forces has been initiated to ensure peace and eliminate unlawful activities in the northeastern region," the Home Minister noted.

He also mentioned that long-standing inter-state border disputes in the northeastern states are being resolved through amicable discussions.

Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia and his deputy Sukanta Majumdar also spoke during the plenary session.

The Chief Ministers of the northeastern states, including Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam), Pema Khandu (Arunachal Pradesh), N. Biren Singh (Manipur), Lalduhoma (Mizoram), Neiphiu Rio (Nagaland), Prem Singh Tamang (Sikkim), and Manik Saha (Tripura), along with the Governors of these states, were in attendance at the NEC meeting.
