Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Bikaner, Rajasthan on Monday, 26 May for a two-day visit focused on reviewing border security arrangements along Rajasthan's international boundary with Pakistan. The visit, described as strategically significant by officials, comes amid heightened concerns over drone-based smuggling of narcotics and weapons and the threat of hybrid warfare along the western frontier.

Key Agenda: Security Review and BSF Interaction

On 26 May, Shah is scheduled to chair a high-level meeting with senior officials to assess border security, anti-infiltration measures, and infrastructure development in border districts. The minister is also expected to visit the Sanchu border outpost, where he will interact directly with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel to gather ground-level feedback on operational challenges and future security strategies.

According to Union Law Minister and Bikaner MP Arjun Ram Meghwal, the discussions will cover strengthening inter-agency coordination, improving surveillance mechanisms, and expanding infrastructure in border areas. Meghwal noted that Shah's engagement with the BSF and other security agencies would be critical in evaluating border management effectiveness.

Hybrid Warfare and Drone Smuggling on the Agenda

A notable focus of the review will be a proposed new project aimed at countering hybrid warfare and drone-based smuggling of narcotics and weapons across the border. Officials said this reflects a shift in the nature of cross-border threats, with drones increasingly being used to bypass conventional security measures. This comes amid a broader national conversation on drone threats following recent security incidents along India's western and northern borders.

Pre-Visit Preparations by State Administration

Chief Secretary V. Srinivas on Saturday chaired a preparatory review meeting at the Secretariat to align security, coordination, and administrative arrangements ahead of the Home Minister's visit. The meeting brought together senior officials from the BSF, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Department of Telecommunications, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

Srinivas directed all departments to ensure close coordination for effective surveillance and robust security in sensitive border zones. He stressed the need for faster intelligence-sharing and stronger joint operational systems. A detailed review of law and order in border districts, narcotics trafficking control, and drone surveillance protocols was also conducted.

Security Arrangements in Place

In view of the Home Minister's visit, the Bikaner administration and police have deployed extensive security arrangements across the city and border areas. Officials confirmed that all agencies operating in Rajasthan's border districts have been placed on heightened alert ahead of the high-level review.

The visit signals the Centre's renewed focus on western border security at a time when cross-border threats have grown in both scale and sophistication. Further policy decisions on border infrastructure and anti-drone measures are expected to follow the review.
