Disruption During Nomination Filing in Howrah Sparks Tension
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 6 (NationPress) Chaos erupted on Monday during the nomination process for Opposition candidates in Howrah and Kolkata.
In Howrah, activists from the Left were reportedly accused of intimidating Trinamool supporters, with claims that women affiliated with the Trinamool Congress were physically pushed.
The police intervened to halt a Left procession outside the Howrah District Magistrate's office. During this time, the Left shouted slogans labeling the Trinamool workers as "Thief, thief" right in front of the District Magistrate’s office.
Allegations surfaced that the names of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party leader Abhishek Banerjee were also disrespected.
A tense confrontation ensued between the two groups. Trinamool supporters claimed that Left activists were harassing them, with reports of women being shoved aside.
Purnima Aich, a supporter of Trinamool candidate Tapas Maity from Domjur, stated: “The CPIM workers were accusing us of theft. When we attempted to protest, they assailed us and shoved us.”
Sheikh Abdul Salam, a Trinamool member from Gram Panchayat No. 2 in Bankra, remarked, “Upon seeing us, they began shouting slogans without cause, including the names of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. As we advanced, they launched an attack on us.”
The altercation between the factions escalated the tension outside the Howrah District Magistrate’s office, with the scuffle occurring in full view of police officers.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata’s Alipore region, allegations emerged regarding the obstruction of BJP candidate Papiya Adhikari's nomination. BJP supporters also clashed with law enforcement.
Papiya Adhikari claimed: “The police made us wait at Hazra intersection for an entire hour.”
Police maintained a tight watch in the vicinity of the Alipore Survey Building, where the area was barricaded. On one side of the barricade, chants of “Jai Shri Ram” were heard, while the opposing side shouted “Joy Bangla.” The Alipore Survey Building became a battleground for slogans from both factions.
Papiya Adhikari, representing the Tollygunj Assembly constituency for the BJP, added: “All Trinamool and CPI (M) candidates have successfully filed their nominations. We are the only ones hindered by the police. They have forced us to remain at Hazra Crossing for an extended period. The police are acting in favor of Trinamool. Are they aiming for us to boycott the elections? If we are not permitted to file our nominations, how will the elections proceed?”
However, police officials asserted that numerous workers and supporters were being redirected for security reasons and that no one was prevented from submitting their nominations.
Trinamool candidates Debashis Kumar from Rashbehari constituency and Shobhandeb Chatterjee from Ballygunge constituency successfully filed their nominations at the Alipore Survey Building on the same day.
Law enforcement was proactive in dispersing the crowd outside the Alipore Survey Building, with a significant number of officers deployed on-site.
