Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 26 (NationPress) Congress MP Rakibul Hussain accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of launching a series of verbal assaults against him, a situation that arose after his significant victory over AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal in the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency during the last parliamentary elections.
During a press conference, Hussain asserted that the animosity from Sarma began immediately following his win over Ajmal by an impressive margin of nearly 10 lakh votes.
He noted that their previously amicable relationship soured dramatically after the election results in Dhubri.
“Our relationship was good until then. Suddenly, I became his target the moment I defeated his ally, Badruddin Ajmal, by such a significant margin,” Hussain claimed.
Hussain further remarked that Ajmal's defeat disrupted the Chief Minister's political strategy.
“After Ajmal's loss, Sarma realized he could no longer leverage Ajmal's name for political gain. From that point, the verbal attacks against me commenced. He is struggling to come to terms with the scale of Ajmal's defeat,” Hussain stated.
He went on to assert that with the BJP reportedly encountering escalating opposition in Upper Assam from communities such as the Moran, Matak, and tea tribes, the Chief Minister is now attempting to mend political ties with Ajmal.
Hussain emphasized that the BJP's standing has weakened in Upper Assam, highlighting the lack of representation from tea tribes in the assembly and at the national level.
“In light of this scenario, Sarma is convinced that to secure victories in the upcoming Assembly elections, he will once again require Badruddin Ajmal,” Hussain asserted. He made a pointed allegation that Ajmal, who is believed to be residing outside the state, was summoned back for electoral reasons.
“Badruddin Ajmal is an old friend of Himanta. This is not merely my assertion—Sarma himself has previously stated that Ajmal fields candidates whenever requested,” Hussain alleged.
Turning to the Samaguri Assembly by-election, Hussain accused Sarma of manipulating the results.
He claimed that despite Samaguri being a stronghold for him, the by-election results were swayed through alleged rigging.
“The constituents of Samaguri are my loyal supporters. The outcome of the by-election was a result of manipulation,” Hussain remarked, asserting that the Congress party would regain the seat with a substantial victory in the next election.
