He has also mandated a thorough investigation into the security failures.

“On a personal note, my government and I humbly seek forgiveness from all the devotees of Jagannath,” CM Majhi stated on his official X account.

He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families of the devotees who perished during the stampede at Saradhabali, close to Gundicha Temple. He prayed for Lord Jagannath to bestow strength upon those mourning the loss of their loved ones.

He mentioned that the “overwhelming eagerness of the devotees to catch a glimpse of Mahaprabhu at Sharadhabali led to a regrettable incident as a result of the ensuing crowding and disorder.”

“This lapse in safety is inexcusable. A thorough investigation into the security failures will be carried out, and I have instructed that appropriate measures be taken against those accountable,” Majhi added.

In the meantime, Director General of Police, Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, urged devotees to adhere to police guidelines and to avoid taking photos or videos during their darshan of the holy triad at Gundicha Temple, which can create disturbances for others.

“I request everyone to comply with the directions provided by the police at various locations. Many devotees are seen taking pictures with their mobile phones while amidst the crowd, causing inconvenience. They must cooperate with the authorities. An inquiry into this unfortunate incident is underway, and necessary corrective actions are being implemented,” Khurania emphasized.

During a media briefing, Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain disclosed that after the ceremonial closing of Darshan (Pahuda), when the deities' darshan commenced early in the morning, a considerable influx of devotees surged toward the cordon.

He noted that approximately nine individuals experienced breathlessness and were promptly evacuated to the hospital. At present, three deaths have been confirmed, and six other individuals are receiving medical treatment.
