New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) - The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed the tragic loss of Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar, both of whom suffered fatal injuries in a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft accident. The IAF has extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families of the fallen officers.
In a statement shared on their social media platform X, the IAF remarked, “IAF acknowledges the loss of Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar, who lost their lives in the Su-30 incident. All IAF personnel convey their deepest sympathies and stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during this sorrowful time.”
The Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet was engaged in a routine training operation when it crashed in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam, about 60 km from Jorhat. Search and rescue operations are actively ongoing in the area.
Earlier on Thursday, the aircraft had lost radar contact while on a mission over Assam's Karbi Anglong, according to defense officials.
As per the Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO), the aircraft disappeared from radar during what was described as a standard operation, leading to an immediate response from the Air Force and other security entities.
“An IAF Sukhoi-30 aircraft has lost radar contact. Air Force teams are deployed to gather facts and assess the situation,” stated the PRO.
IAF search and rescue teams, along with local administration personnel and various security agencies, have been mobilized to locate the aircraft and determine the specifics surrounding the incident.
Officials are currently working to gather more information regarding the aircraft’s last known position and the number of individuals onboard.
The Sukhoi-30MKI is a vital part of the IAF's multi-role fighter fleet and plays a significant role in India's air defense strategy.
Similar incidents involving Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft have been recorded previously.
In August 2019, an IAF Sukhoi-30MKI crashed in a field near Tezpur in Assam during a training flight, but both pilots managed to eject safely and were subsequently rescued.
Earlier, in May 2015, another Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft went down approximately 36 km south of Tezpur Air Force Base shortly after takeoff, with both pilots ejecting safely before the crash.
