Imphal, Dec 12 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu stated on Friday that the Centre is diligently collaborating with local leaders, civil society groups, and diverse communities to promote the inclusive and sustainable development of Manipur.
While inaugurating and laying the groundwork for multiple developmental initiatives in the Naga tribal-populated Senapati district, the President emphasized the government's dedication to ensuring that development benefits every region of the country.
She highlighted that particular focus has been directed toward expediting progress in remote tribal areas.
According to President Murmu, the true strength of Manipur stems from its rich diversity, cultures, languages, and traditions. “The hills and the valleys have consistently complemented each other like two halves of a stunning land. I encourage all communities to persist in supporting the endeavors for peace, understanding, and reconciliation,” she remarked.
The President acknowledged the aspirations of the people of Manipur, placing importance on the dignity, security, and development opportunities for tribal communities, thereby facilitating their enhanced engagement in the country’s advancement.
In reference to the PM JANMAN (Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan) scheme, she expressed optimism that the initiatives under this mission would significantly elevate the living standards of tribal communities, particularly the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
Launched in November 2023 by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the PM JANMAN scheme aims to improve the socio-economic status of PVTGs by providing essential amenities, closing development gaps, and guaranteeing access to fundamental services like housing, clean drinking water, healthcare, education, and connectivity.
This initiative encompasses 75 PVTG communities across 18 states and one union territory, with interventions spanning nine ministries to deliver benefits such as solar energy, mobile communication towers, roads, and skill development.
President Murmu pointed out that the Maram Naga tribe is the only PVTG community in Manipur. “I fully empathize with your concerns and your aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous future. I reaffirm the Government of India’s commitment to the welfare and advancement of the people of Manipur, including those in tribal areas. Let’s continue to collaborate for a peaceful and thriving Manipur,” she stated.
She also mentioned that the projects inaugurated on Friday would further enhance security, educational, and healthcare facilities, as well as improve community infrastructure in the region. In recent years, focused investments have benefitted the hill districts of Manipur, improving national highways, rural roads, healthcare services, drinking water access, electricity supply, and educational infrastructure.
Various livelihood programs have also been launched to enhance the living standards of tribal communities, she noted. “These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to aiding tribal communities while honoring their distinct identities and traditions,” the President added.
Earlier, she received a warm welcome at a Naga village in Senapati district. Before attending the district headquarters function, she interacted with internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by ethnic violence who are currently residing in relief camps.
“President Droupadi Murmu engaged with several Internally Displaced Persons in Senapati. She assured that the government is implementing several measures to provide education for students, promote livelihoods, rebuild homes, skill individuals, and create job opportunities, especially for youth and others. She underscored the significance of harmony, unity, and continuous dialogue for the peace and prosperity of the people of Manipur,” stated a post on the President of India’s X handle.
On Friday morning, during her second day of a two-day visit to Manipur, President Murmu paid floral tributes at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal, commemorating the 86th Nupi Lal Day, which honors two women-led uprisings against British rule. An official noted that the President paid heartfelt homage to the courageous women warriors of Manipur, whose valor continues to inspire generations. Accompanying her, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla also offered floral tributes at the memorial.
She also prayed at the Shree Govindaji Temple located within the Palace Compound.
