New Delhi, May 3 (NationPress) Following the recent ban on all imports from Pakistan, India has now officially prohibited Pakistan-flagged ships from docking at any of its ports. This decisive action comes in the wake of a horrific attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which tragically resulted in the loss of 26 lives.
A directive issued by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways states that vessels bearing the flag of Pakistan are no longer permitted to enter Indian ports.
Furthermore, Indian-flagged ships are also restricted from accessing ports in Pakistan.
Quoting national security concerns, the ministry has asserted that this ban is necessary to "safeguard Indian assets, cargo, and related infrastructure for the public interest and the enhancement of Indian shipping." This directive is effective immediately and will continue until further notice.
The ministry's order elaborates, "The purpose of this Act is to promote the growth and ensure the effective management of an Indian mercantile marine tailored to serve national interests best."
It further clarifies, "A ship flying the flag of Pakistan shall not be permitted to dock at any Indian port, nor shall an Indian-flagged vessel be allowed to visit any ports in Pakistan."
As per the ministry's statement, these measures are intended to protect the safety of Indian assets, cargo, and connected infrastructure while advancing the goals of Indian shipping.
Any requests for exemptions from this order will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Earlier in the day, India had announced a blanket ban on all imports—both direct and indirect—from Pakistan due to escalating tensions with the neighboring nation.
A notification from the Commerce Ministry indicates that "the direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan is hereby prohibited with immediate effect until further orders."
"This restriction has been imposed in the interest of national security and public policy; any exceptions will require prior approval from the Government of India," the notification emphasized.
