Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Dec. 6 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Congress president, K. Selvaperunthagai, affirmed on Saturday that the INDIA Bloc in Tamil Nadu is “strong, stable, and fully united,” rejecting rumors about behind-the-scenes political discussions involving senior Congress officials and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay.
After paying homage to B.R. Ambedkar on his death anniversary, Selvaperunthagai addressed the media in Chennai, stating he had no knowledge of any supposed meeting between All India Professionals Congress chairman Praveen Chakravarty and actor-politician Vijay.
“I have not been informed by the national leadership regarding such a gathering. For the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), our discussions are strictly with our coalition partner, the DMK. There are intentional efforts to create uncertainty within the alliance, but the INDIA Bloc remains steadfast,” he emphasized.
He highlighted that the party's primary focus is on coalition negotiations as the 2026 Assembly elections approach.
“Our national leadership has established a five-member seat-sharing committee to commence formal discussions with the DMK. The committee has already had its initial courtesy meeting with DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin,” he explained.
According to Selvaperunthagai, the preliminary conversations were promising, with Stalin expressing contentment over the developments.
“The Chief Minister indicated that the DMK will soon create its own committee, after which detailed discussions on seat-sharing will begin,” he noted, stressing that the Congress is optimistic about a smooth and coordinated process within the alliance framework.
When questioned about potential disciplinary actions against Chakravarty if the meeting with Vijay is confirmed, he clarified that only the Congress high command holds the authority to make such decisions.
“It is for the national leadership to take a decision. As the state Congress president, I have not received any directives or communication on this matter,” he reiterated.
Disputing rumors of divisions or parallel negotiations, Selvaperunthagai asserted that the INDIA Bloc partners are politically and strategically aligned.
“Attempts to create discord will not be successful,” he stated, adding that the Congress is committed to fortifying the alliance to present a united front in Tamil Nadu.
As election preparations accelerate, his comments aim to convey clarity and unity amid rising political speculation in the state.
