India's exports hit $80.14 billion in July 2026, up 13.3% on electronics surge
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's total merchandise and services exports surged 13.31 per cent year-on-year to $80.14 billion in July 2026, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry on Thursday, 13 August. The double-digit growth was powered by a sharp jump in petroleum products and electronic goods, underscoring the broadening base of India's export engine.
Key Drivers of Export Growth
Merchandise exports alone climbed to $44.24 billion in July 2026, up from $36.98 billion in the same month of the previous year. Petroleum products led the charge, rising 67.64 per cent to $6.92 billion, while electronic goods shipments posted a 57.4 per cent surge to $5.92 billion — reflecting the growing momentum of India's electronics manufacturing sector.
Engineering goods exports rose 17.71 per cent to $12.24 billion, and organic and inorganic chemicals grew 14.39 per cent to $2.8 billion. The labour-intensive textile segment — covering cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups, and handloom products — recorded an 8.4 per cent increase to $1.02 billion, a signal that traditional export sectors are also holding ground.
Services Exports Stay Resilient
Estimated services exports for July 2026 stood at $35.89 billion, up from $33.74 billion in July 2025. Services imports for the month were estimated at $18.94 billion, compared to $17.30 billion a year earlier. India's services sector — anchored by IT, business process management, and financial services — continues to contribute a significant share to overall export performance.
Import Bill Also Rises
Total merchandise and services imports for July 2026 rose 15.83 per cent to $95.16 billion, widening the trade deficit. The higher import bill reflects both elevated commodity prices and robust domestic demand, though it also signals pressure on the current account.
April–July Cumulative Picture
For the first four months of the current financial year (April–July 2026-27), India's total exports of merchandise and services are estimated at $316.42 billion, representing a 13.16 per cent growth from $279.63 billion in the corresponding period of 2025-26. Cumulative merchandise exports during April–July 2026-27 reached $173.78 billion, up 17.04 per cent from $148.48 billion in the same period of the previous financial year. This comes amid a broader global trade environment marked by demand shifts and supply chain realignments that have, notably, worked in India's favour in electronics and chemicals.
With the full-year export target under watch, the July numbers offer early evidence that India's trade momentum is holding — though the widening import bill will keep policymakers alert to current account dynamics in the months ahead.
