India becomes one of the select group of nations that have such trains. This will go a long way in ensuring that India adopts clean technology in the railway sector.'

Context

The flag-off places India alongside a small group of nations — including Germany and China — that have operationalised hydrogen fuel-cell trains on their rail networks. The Jind–Sonipat corridor is the first such route in India, signalling a shift from diesel traction on non-electrified lines toward zero-emission alternatives.

Indian Railways has pursued a net-zero emissions target by 2030 through electrification, alternative fuels, and energy efficiency measures. The hydrogen train initiative is the most visible step yet in applying fuel-cell technology to passenger rail.

Policy Backdrop

The train's launch aligns directly with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved in 2023, which allocated resources for scaling indigenous production and deployment of green hydrogen across transport and industry.
