India Post launches Dak Mitra, Dak Seva apps; 14 post offices renovated
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia on 24 August 2025 unveiled two new digital applications — Dak Mitra and Dak Seva — and inaugurated 14 renovated post offices across multiple states, marking what he described as a new chapter in India Post's century-old journey into the digital age. The event, organised by the Department of Posts in New Delhi, signals an accelerating push to transform one of the country's most expansive public service networks.
What the New Apps Do
The Dak Mitra app is designed to digitally equip postal workers operating at the last mile. Active across 1.4 lakh branch post offices since its upgraded rollout in May 2025, the app has already facilitated 2.45 crore domestic Speed Post and parcel bookings and assisted in the delivery of 15.09 crore postal articles. On the financial side, it has contributed to ₹1,102 crore in new insurance premiums and a total premium collection of ₹5,431 crore. Key features include Aadhaar-based KYC for savings accounts, biometric cash withdrawals, and digital e-KYC.
The Dak Seva app, launched on a pilot basis in June 2025, has crossed nearly 10 lakh downloads and enabled bookings of 91.34 lakh mail and parcel articles. Available in 23 Indian languages, it lets citizens track domestic and international articles, book Speed Post and parcels, use e-Money Order services, lodge complaints, locate nearby post offices, calculate postage, and access information on small savings schemes and PLI/RPLI insurance. Payments via UPI, internet banking, and cards are supported.
Post Offices Renovated Across 17 States
As part of a nationwide modernisation drive, 40 post offices across 17 states have been identified for upgradation. Of these, 27 have been completed so far, with 14 inaugurated at Sunday's event. Locations include post offices in Patliputra (Bihar), Vasant Kunj (Delhi), Sector-56 Gurugram, Kakurgachi (Kolkata), Vidisha and Sanchi (Madhya Pradesh), Shillong, Kandivali West (Mumbai), and several in Nagpur, Lucknow, and Prayagraj.
Scindia emphasised that digital transformation does not diminish the role of physical post offices, which he described as 'centres of trust and human connection for millions.'
India Post's Financial Turnaround
India Post is also reporting strong revenue growth. Revenue climbed from approximately ₹13,218 crore in FY 2024-25 to ₹15,296 crore in FY 2025-26 — a rise of roughly 16%. In the first quarter of FY 2026-27, it recorded its highest-ever quarterly revenue of ₹4,008.95 crore, crossing the ₹4,000-crore mark for the first time, with nearly 22% year-on-year growth.
What the Minister Said
'Today, citizens expect government services not only to be available but available on their mobile phones, at the touch of a finger, in a fast, simple and transparent manner. Our responsibility is not merely to digitise old processes but to redesign the entire experience around the citizen,' Scindia said at the event.
He added: 'Old trust, new technology; the same warmth, new speed — this is the new India Post,' framing the department's evolution as aligned with the vision of Developed India 2047 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
The event was attended by Minister of State for Communications Chandrashekhar Pemmasani, Secretary (Posts) Subrata Das, Director General (Posts) Jitendra Gupta, public representatives from eight states, and a large number of postal employees. With revenue at record highs and digital adoption accelerating, the department's next test will be sustaining this momentum at scale across its vast rural network.
