India Post Payments Bank Registers 2.68 Crore Accounts in 2024, 59% Owned by Women

New Delhi, Dec 20 (NationPress) India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has successfully opened 2.68 crore accounts in 2024 (as of November), with 1.56 crore or 59% of these accounts belonging to women and 77% being registered in rural regions, as reported by the government on Friday.

Out of these, 1.04 crore customers took advantage of mobile banking services, 69 lakh utilized VDC (Virtual Debit Card) services, and approximately 2,600 crore were disbursed via AePS (Aadhaar Enabled Payment System) during the January-November timeframe.

In total, around 3.62 crore IPPB customers received direct benefit transfer (DBT) benefits amounting to Rs 34,950 crore, while 4.40 lakh digital life certificates were issued to pensioners during the same period, according to the Ministry of Communications. Notably, nearly 58% of all DBT beneficiaries are women, and the bank is actively promoting women empowerment, in line with government initiatives.

The Parcel Monitoring Application (PMA) has transformed the sharing of real-time delivery information from 4.33 lakh articles in May 2019 to 5.35 crore articles in October 2024.

As of October, 400,000 KYC verifications have been successfully completed.

The ministry also reported that Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) gates have been installed at 42 major mail exchange hubs to facilitate real-time tracking throughout the network.

“The establishment of 233 nodal delivery centres has significantly improved the speed and efficiency of parcel delivery, covering over 1,600 PIN codes and managing 30% of the total parcels delivered across India,” it noted.

Aadhaar centres have been expanded to serve defence personnel, including the highest centre at Siachen, with 110 operational centres situated within Army Postal Service locations.

More than 1,000 Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra (DNKs) have been launched to facilitate commercial exports through postal services nationwide. The Department of Posts has also signed the Postal Payment Service Multilateral Agreement (PPSMA) for electronic postal payment service exchanges among signatory parties.

Additionally, 25,133 individuals participated in the first tranche of the Rozgar Mela held on October 29.

The construction of 56 new postal buildings and the renovation of 95 have enhanced service delivery, as reported by the ministry.
